DBE® esters - Cleaners

The ability of DBE® esters to dissolve many industrial soils makes it the product of choice in many areas where cleaning is needed. Examples of application areas are in resin clean-up, paint booth cleaning, degreasing, industrial cleaning, graffiti and hand-cleaning in an industrial setting. The low miscibility of DBE® esters with water makes for easy separation from effluent, and recycling if required.

DBE® esters have demonstrated effectiveness as a cleaning solvent for industrial, consumer and institutional applications. For example, DBE® esters have been used extensively as a cleaning solvent for the clean-up of tools and equipment in the fiberglass-reinforced plastics (FRP) and cultured marble industries. An inhibitor such as hydroquinone can be added to DBE® esters to prevent gelation in FRP applications. DBE® esters will effectively dissolve a number of polymers and resins such as

  • Alkyd
  • Epoxy
  • Acrylic
  • Polyesters
  • Polyurethane
  • Vinyl copolymers

PU cleaning:

DBE® esters are often used in the polyurethane casting process for spray gun cleaning and clean-up of foam casting moulds e.g. for the automotive dashboards.

Acetone is one of the solvents commonly used in cleaning applications for uncured resins. Acetone readily evaporates, requiring the user to continually add acetone to the cleaning bath to "make up" for evaporative losses. The low flash point of acetone also may cause concerns about flammability. DBE® esters have a slow rate of evaporation, have a high flash point and can be recycled by vacuum distillation, which can deliver significant cost savings. Cost savings also result from DBE® esters’ slow evaporation rate, which minimizes the amount of solvent needed.

Typical vacuum distillation conditions for DBE® esters are 26 inches of Hg and 300°F. They are very versatile enabling it to be used in both indoor and outdoor cleaning applications. For use in indoor cleaning applications one may wish to consider formulating with DBE®-LVP esters or DBE®-3 esters due to their lower vapor pressure. DBE® esters are readily soluble in alcohols, ketones, ethers, and most hydrocarbons, but only slightly soluble in higher paraffinic hydrocarbons.

DBE® esters are an attractive choice for blending with other solvents to custom fit a solvent blend for specific applications. When formulating blends, the use of Hansen Parameters is helpful in many cases.
